District 7070

For the purpose of more efficient administration, the Board of Directors of Rotary International is authorized to divide the territory covered by member clubs into Districts. The International President, as directed by the Board of Directors, promulgates a list of districts with their boundaries, provided that no change or addition shall be made over the objection of a majority of the clubs in the districts affected thereby. We are in District 7070. Until June 30, 1989 there were 73 Clubs in District 7070, but effective July 1, 1989 a new district, District 7080, came into existence, being composed of 21 Clubs from District 7070 and 19 Clubs from District 7090. This reduced the size of District 7070 to 51 clubs.

A District Governor for every District is elected annually at the Rotary International Convention. The District Governor shall be an Active, Past Service, or a Senior Active Member in good standing of a member club in the district for which he is nominated. He/she is the representative of Rotary International in the said district and is an officer of Rotary International.

The Clubs in each District pay per capita dues to the District Fund. This may change from year to year depending on the District budget. The fiscal year of the District runs concurrently with the fiscal year of the Clubs. In fact the Rotary year at all levels is from July 1 to the following June 30.

It is the duty of the District Governor to hold a District Conference each year. All members of Toronto East are automatically registered for this conference and your attendance is encouraged. The only costs incurred are for your meals and accommodation if applicable. The District Conference is held each fall, generally in October and like the Rotary International Convention, is open to the families of Rotarians.

Each year the District Governor Nominee (DGN) hosts a District Assembly for the instruction of incoming club presidents, club officers, directors and committee chairmen. The DGN also hosts a Presidents' Elect Training Seminar (PETS) as a special training session for incoming Presidents. It is customary for the DGN and the Presidents Elect to visit Rotary International headquarters in Evanston during the PETS weekend.

There is a Presidents' Club in District 7070, which meets 4 to 6 times during the year under the chairmanship of the DGN. These meetings are held for the purpose of instruction, exchange of information, inspiration and inter club fellowship.

The District Governor writes monthly letters to the clubs in his/her district. In addition to the particular message of the Governor, the newsletters carry information as to what is going on in the different clubs and gives advance notice of forthcoming district events. Excerpts from the letter or copies are frequently included in our club bulletin. The District Governor's Newsletter records the average attendance of each club in the district and awards are given in several categories based on this record.

The District Governor makes an official visit, on a mutually satisfactory date, to each club in the District. On the agreed date he confers with the club president and secretary concerning details of club operations. This is followed by the regular club luncheon attended by all members of the club. A committee chairman may be asked to review the activities of his/her committee and the District Governor can often give timely advice or suggestions based on his/her experience or of the experience of other clubs.
