Toronto East Club HistoryCharter Date: April 28, 1965The Toronto East Rotary Club received its Charter on April 25, 1965. Then District Governor Tibor Gregor made the presentation to our Charter President Bill Phelan and Toronto East was welcomed as the fiftieth club in district 707. We were granted rights to the territory lying within the corporate limits of the City of Toronto, from the center of the Don River, north from Lakeshore Blvd. We were sponsored by the Toronto Rotary Club and our initial roster consisted of 26 members. Many clubs were inaugurated after April 1965, resulting in the formation of a new district and the renaming of our current area as District 7070. The governing body of our Club is its Board of Directors. A copy of the Constitution and By-laws will tell you who constitutes the Board of Directors, how they are elected, their duties, and the duration of their time in office. The Constitution and By-laws also indicate the various committees which constitute the Four Avenues of Service, and the duties of these committees. The President, before assuming office, strikes the committees, and publishes a committee structure for his/her year. It is fitting that every member should, at some time, serve on the Board of Directors to experience the challenges and responsibilities and to enjoy the satisfaction of participating in the operation of our Club. Paul Harris FellowsUpon the death of Paul Harris in 1947, the R.I. Board of Directors established a Graduate Fellowship plan as a memorial and they issued a call to comply with a mandate of the 1938 Convention to raise $2,000,000 for The Rotary Foundation. The response from individual Rotarians was immediate. Today, those who carry on this tradition of honouring the memory of Paul Harris by contributing US $1,000, or for whom US $1,000 is donated in their honour or memory, are designated Paul Harris Fellows. It has been the custom in Toronto East to honour members for outstanding service, by making such contribution on their behalf. As a member in good standing, you have the privilege of nominating individuals for a Paul Harris Fellowship and a current list of Toronto East Paul Harris Fellows can be found as follows: Toronto East, Paul Harris Fellows
