The Rotary FoundationThe objective of The Rotary Foundation is "the furthering of understanding and friendly relations between peoples of different nations through the fostering of tangible and effective projects of a philanthropic, charitable, educational, or other eleemosynary nature." First proposed in 1917, the Rotary Foundation is the world's largest private philanthropic organization and is supported solely by it members. Funds raised in each district are deposited with the Foundation and invested for a period of three years. The investment income is used to support the operating expenses of the Foundation, thus freeing 100% of the capital for use by Rotary clubs for their projects. Any Rotary club may petition the Foundation for full funding of large projects or matching grants for smaller undertakings. Many worthwhile enterprises come to fruition through the use of matching grants. All funds raised in District 7070 are returned to our district for use by the member clubs in the following ways. Education:Rotary is very involved in education on an international as well as community basis. The greatest emphasis is through the ROTARY FOUNDATION, which is administered at the Rotary International level by a Board of Trustees. Every club contributes to the Rotary Foundation and every club may submit candidates for the many Scholarships:
These scholarships are for a year's study in a country other than the candidate's own country and provide for all academic fees plus round-trip transportation costs, room and board, books, laboratory fees and educational supplies. The scholarship recipients are expected to be goodwill ambassadors in their host country. Group Study Exchange:Group Study Exchange is another Rotary Foundation program, enabling teams of young business and professional persons in different countries to exchange visits of several week's duration, to develop international friendships, to learn differing ideas, ways of life, and other business and professional practices. Each of two paired Rotary districts in different parts of the world sends and receives a team during a Rotary year. Health, Hunger & Humanities Grants:The Trustees of The Rotary Foundation will consider requests from clubs for grants towards projects in developing countries that improve the health, eliminate hunger or improve the social fabric of the people. 3H projects are generally too large for any one club to handle and are therefore co-ordinated by the Foundation to maximize resources. Youth Programs:Rotary Clubs have been very active in projects involving youth. Youth Exchange is an outstanding education program and the only program open to relatives of Rotarians. High school students, seventeen years of age, are sponsored by a Rotary Club to attend school for a year in a foreign country. Arrangements are made for a club in the receiving country to host the student. During his or her stay the student lives with a family, or families, preferably but not necessarily Rotary families. The host club arranges enrollment in school. The parents of the child are responsible for travel costs and the host club for living arrangements and for a regular allowance for the student. "Camp Enterprise":This program is designed to expose grade twelve high school students, young men and young women, to the free enterprise system. The program has been run successfully for a number of years and is held annually in District 7070. RYLA:Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, is still another youth program. This is a district program for 18 to 25 year olds. Some of the participants are already in the work force and may be selected by their employer because they exhibit leadership potential. Others may still be in school. Individual clubs may sponsor candidates to participate in this June program. It is held under outstanding educational leadership and is of a week's duration. |
